The One That Got Away - live at Ringparkfest Würzburg, August 7, 2011.

This song is different from most of my other songs. I usually don’t believe in sitting down with nothing and believing I can just make a song appear out of thin air. I usually need some sort of idea/inspiration/emotion that gets it all started.
This song, however, I wrote sort of on assignment from myself. It occurred to me on a Monday that I needed to write a song that I could record solo until Thursday when we had studio time booked. The studio was booked to record a band song but I knew we wouldn’t have time to record two full-band songs with overdubs in the time we had. And I felt like the EP “Makin’ Trouble” needed one more song. Like I said, one I could record solo.
This got started from a line in the Larry Brown book I had been reading about how everybody still remembered the first girl they ever were in love with.
I guess the fact that I wrote the song like this is not that remarkable. But it has grown on me. I play it in most solo or duo sets and it often gets a real good reaction.
In Sweden a guy came up to me saying: “I need to tell you two things. 1. I want the CD this song is on and 2. you ruined my night cause I’m going to be thinking about my first love all night.” He said it jokingly but I think there was some truth in it.
